   Jürg Schmutz
The watercolorist Jürg Schmutz, originating from Rolle, presents a new series of works, translating his observation of water, clouds together with the sensation experimented of the furtive sight of landscapes while travelling. In the heart of his art walk, from the height of his workshop overlooking the Leman, he is scrutinising again and again the subtle and changing movings of the lake, - his lake -, imposing him his various humors : grey, limpid, luminous, agitated, furious, cloudy, sometimes lightly iridescent, or simply quieting, calming. Water is of one of his major preoccupations in painting. Often he goes back to this subject, with the sorrow of exploring, discovering, finding new formulas. Another source of inspiration is the more tumultuous waves of the Atlantic coast of Bretagne; also the flow of the rivers. This fluid element, capturing endlessly the light, offers innumerable instants, always different, elusive. The artist, however, attains to fix these fragile moments with
great skills and ability.

In a farther distance, traces of his travel in Corea can be identified. He discovered this Asian country for the first time in 2007. Tue artist’s works were chosen to represent Switzerland in an exhibition of watercolorists from all over the world. Watercolor is the mean of expression with which he communicates all his talent and sensitivity, as he explains it :

“Watercolor is definitely in the centre of my practice. Through the transparency it imposes and through the way it constrains the one working with it to organise his chromatic values, it permits more than any other technique, to apprehend the phenomenon of visual perception, which analyses, - more than the description of a supposed reality of spots and things -, is the subject of these few pieces.
The introduction of small formats permits, the moreover, to transpose fugitive moments, landscapes seen quickly through the window of a train or other precarious renderings in geographic or temporal distances. Rolle, August 2009”.
